BOZAR – 2014 Project of the Year – Honorable Mention – Historic Barn Rehabilitation
This Historic Barn is located in the town of Crested Butte. It had to be strategically lifted off the ground in order to install a proper foundation. The re-constructing took place in full compliance with the town’s board of zoning and review.
In the Historic Residential Remodel Category, Marilyn and Kevin Krill received an Honorable Mention for the conversion and rehabilitation of the historic accessory building at 209 Whiterock Avenue. David Gross General Contractors, was the contractor for this project and in concert with Andrew Hadley, the architect, they were applauded for the extreme amount of time and work that they all put forth to rehabilitate this historic building. Board members felt that it was important work that if not done would have seen the building deteriorate, which would not enable generations to come to be able to admire this beauty. From its materials and design the building was probably originally constructed as a barn and later used as a garage.

BOZAR – 2013 Project of the Year – The Company Store Building for The Secret Stash
The Project of the Year for a historic commercial remodel in 2013 was awarded to J & K Holdings, LLC for the rehabilitation and historic preservation work of the 1937 commercial building located at 303 Elk Avenue. The Board commended Andrew Hadley of Andrew Hadley Architects, and David Gross General Contractors for the sensitivity of this unique historic structure. Their collective attention to detail in the rehabilitation on the project as a whole was greatly appreciated.
The majority of the work was interior, which preserved the beautiful tin ceiling tiles and wood floors. The owner was quite adamant about revitalizing the transom windows beneath the awning on the South elevation, which restored the front facade to what would have been historically seen in 1937. A restorative paint job and placement of required roof penetrations for ventilation were also sensitive to visibility of this important historic structure in the Elk Avenue business district. The rear ADA ramp, although not historic, was reconstructed to ensure safety and accessibility on the North.
This building, originally owned by the Colorado Supply Company, a subsidiary of Colorado Fuel and Iron (CF &I), was rebuilt in 1937 after a devastating fire. The building is constructed of cinder blocks of which the cinders came from the CF & I coke ovens and Lyle McNeill and his brother fashioned them with a hand press. This rehabilitation was very respectful of the building’s history and the Board was proud to award this.
